Women in their early 40s may be aware of the perimenopause looming on the horizon. But teasing out what’s perimenopause and what’s a product of getting older is tricky. The run-up to menopause can bring a tide of new and alarming symptoms – not least cognitive ones such as difficulty recalling names and numbers, trouble concentrating, or even, putting the keys in the fridge. Though they have long been ignored or dismissed as inevitable consequences of aging, these neurological manifestations of menopause are increasingly drawing scientific interest. It is becoming much clearer that real changes are occurring in the brain during this period – and that some of them can ultimately be positive.
