Historically one of the nation's most scenic drives, the A82 forms the west coast route from Inverness to Glasgow, passing by Loch Ness, wraps around the foot of Ben Nevis, through Glencoe, and lining the shores of Loch Lomond. The A82 begins on our trip in Inverness, forming one of the two crucial thoroughfares, passing just west and then towards the south through a heavily built up and trafficked part of town. Once leaving Inverness though, the scenery quickly turns rural, with primarily wooded areas taking hold as we see the start of the famous Loch Ness on the left hand side. A few bends and junctions take us through Drumnadrochit, and past the popular Urquhart Castle before reaching the quieter village of Invermoriston. Loch Ness finishes at Fort Augustus, where a canal continues southwards and we give way for a time to canal traffic. The woods and lakes continue as we head towards Invergarry, passing Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy, before turning away from the water and linking up with the A86 at Spean Bridge. Traffic increases as we get closer to Fort William, sitting near the base of Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the British Isles. More scenic views after Fort William as we look out to Loch Linnhe, and then across Ballachulish Bridge and to Glencoe. After this, the famous Glencoe Pass with remarkable scenery as we wind our way through the narrow valley, and then over it and onto much flatter terrain and very straight sections through Rannoch Moor, before several sharp turns as we descend towards Loch Tulla and then the Bridge of Orchy. The bendy path continues through Tyndrum, Crianlarich, and eventually we see the northern tip of Loch Lomond. Quite narrow at times along this stretch with very few overtaking opportunities slows our progress as we line along the river, turning at Tarbet and onto a better quality of road as we continue past Luss, and duelling as we reach the Dumbarton area. The scene urbanises very quickly as we pass by the Erskine Bridge and into the Glasgow area, progress gradually becoming slower and then much more so once we lose dual carriageway status a few miles from Glasgow city Centre. A very straight road with lots of traffic and traffic control makes for an arduous end to the journey, eventually landing at Cowcaddens in Glasgow city centre.
