Here's a relaxing video of Nora making a "Birka" Viking Pouch, for viking reenactment. Download the pattern to make your own at: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/79061... Music by Jean-François Bélanger / jean-françois-bélanger / @jean-francoisbelanger8335 The "Birka" pouch is based on a find from Birka, Sweden, a major viking trade port. The original had several metal pieces, which were actually what was found, as most of the leather had decayed. The shape and clasping method of the pouch were extrapolated from these metal pieces. My version of the pouch usually includes a tooled flap, because leather tooling is my specialty, and I think it adds beauty and character to the pouch (and makes it unique/individual); However, there are very few examples of tooled leather in the viking age, most of the finds being on sheathes and holy books from Ireland. It's hard to say whether this is because the Irish did more tooling than the Scandinavian vikings, or if more leather survived in Irish settlements because of the acidic bogs present there (which preserve organic material very well). We don't know if any pouches like this would have had tooling on them... but it sure does look nice! The design book used is Viking and Slavic Ornamental Design, published by Triglav. They're out of stock on Amazon, but you can get them from this Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/86583... #leathercraft #withme
