In one breath, a head-bobbing bass line will incite a dancefloor fit. The next, the energy curls into a prog-ified pop freakout underlined by virtuosic instrumentation and uplifted by simmering vocals meant for a glorious head trip. If Robert Fripp produced Steely Dan, it might sound something like this! The duo—Hans Eberbach a.k.a. “Marsha” and Bob Madsen [bass, production]—will keep you guess guessing (and coming back for more) with their 2021 full-length debut album, Johnny On The Spot [The Highlander Company Records]. “I have musical ADD,” exclaims Bob. “Music is my escape. I’m able to go down a rabbit hole and try all sorts of different rhythms and tones. The Grafenberg Disciples is where I explore pop, funk, new wave, jazz, world music, and dad rock. This band is no-holds barred. Nothing is off the table. I can go into any and all styles. Everything is in service of the song.” A lifelong musician, Bob cut his teeth as an apprentice to the late master engineer and producer Tom Size [Journey, Joe Satriani] in the Bay Area. At the same time, he played countless club dates, honing his skills on stage. Additionally, he collaborated with legends such as Toney Carey of Rainbow fame. In 2020, he tapped the talents of Sacramento-based phenomenon Hans—whose “voice is so good the vocals are all you think about,” hence the nickname in honor of Marsha Brady. Together, they recorded Johnny On The Spot accompanied by iconic drummer Gregg Bissonnette [Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band, David Lee Roth], guitarist Chad Quist, and keyboardist Jerry Merrill. Now, they introduce themselves with the 2021 single “No Words.” An homage to Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, all proceeds from the song and its blockbuster music video (with cameos by Sully Erna of Godsmack, Mike Portnoy of The Winery Dogs, Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, and featuring never-before-seen footage of Neil riding his motorcycle across the U.S.) to the Cedar Sinai Special Research Program For Glioblastoma, which tragically claimed Neil’s life. The eight-minute track winds through moments of lush piano and laidback percussion before building towards a sweeping and upbeat crescendo.
