How Options Selling Can Make You Richer? | Meet Praful Big Bull Series Ep - 10

So this podcast video is starring Praful Kulkarni from Karnataka, who technically began his trading career directly as an Options seller / Writer and is a successful option seller as of now and could be the next big bull of India. Moving ahead with the story, Praful Kulkarni evidently started with options buying, but in the span of around 1 month, he realised that options buying isn’t his cup of tea. Therefore, he got into option selling with an opening capital of ₹20 lacs. The reason he slides into writing options was that he believed in Psychology protection, which could be done with by making consistent profits. As making losses in the beginning can be detrimental to the confidence of a beginner, so since the probability of winning is high in options writing, Praful preferred it more. This advanced options seller feels that the market’s regime has changed a lot from how it was back in 2020. He further said, the 2020 period was intensely forgiving, as the VIX was falling and giving profits even after poor execution. However, as the time passed, he realised there’s much more to understand about the market. He added that the starting capital requirement for an options seller should be minimum rupees 30 to 40 lacs. And starting with 1 lakh capital is nothing but a terrible decision. Praful also told us that he cannot work in stress or tension, and that he works well in momentum and motivation. When asked about the change in risk appetite in terms of percentage along with the change in capital, he answered that risk appetite percentage declines as capital increases. Currently, Praful is an non-directional intraday writer of options, but it wasn’t always like this. He used to carry forward his trades and always hedged his positions. This change in his strategy came as he realised the impact of IV expansion and overnight Gaps. He made a conclusion that positional trading can’t be won with profit maximisation, rather it is won with risk management. Talking about the psychology of this successful options trader, he looks at losses in the stock market as stepping on a snake since you get the same pump of adrenaline. When asked about stop loss being hit, he answered that he cuts off the bleeding (exits), takes a step back, analyses again and puts in additional capital. In Praful’s opinion, the biggest edge that writing options has over buying them is that as options sellers are aware of his upper mark, which is maximum reward. So they could be better at risk management. He connects every step of trading with real life along with trading psychology. When asked about his nightmare, he replied that he’s afraid of flash crashes since he’s an intraday options seller. In the conclusion, he told us how gym and ice baths help him in improving his trading mindset as he’s a believer of the fact that to become a successful trader, discipline is more important than talent.
