Sickle Cell Disorder; Warri Clinic Begins Operations

 A new Sickle Cell Clinic has been established  and inaugurated by the 05 Initiative at the Central Hospital Warri, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State as part of plans to have a sickle cell clinic in the twenty five council areas of the State. The wife of the Delta State governor and founder 05' Initiative, Dame Edith Okowa flagged-off the formal medical operations of the clinic at the weekend in Warri  with a message that every body has a role to play in the fight against Sickle Cell disorder in the society. Experiences shared by those challenged with Sickle Cell disorder and a playlet demonstrating the available services and equipments in sickle cell clinics established by the 05 Initiative, set the tune for the inauguration of the sickle cell clinic at the Central Hospital, Warri. The well furnished center is equipped with equipments found in other sickle cell clinics established by the 05  Initiative across the state however, the new centre got a mini Newborn Screening Machine too, making the Warri Central Hospital the first among all sickle cell clinics in the state to have a mini equipment for detecting sickle cell disorder in newborns. Dame Edith Okowa expressed fulfilment in completing the project in Warri, which journey started since 2019 and that her vision was to establish Sickle Cell clinics in every central hospital in the state before the end of Governor Okowa's administration. She called for support to those suffering from the disorder and that parents, religious leaders and teachers to educate those under their care on the importance of knowing their genotype as it would go a long way to eradicate newborn cases of  sickle cell. The Director General 05 Initiative Mrs Kevwe Agas, the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ejiro Oghenegha, and the Council Chairman, Warri South, Hon. Micheal Tidi, admonished the people to make good use of the facility provided by the 05 Initiative The event featured a presentation on sickle cell crisis; triggers and management by Dr Kesiene Abeke and a nutrition talk by Dr. Uche Okwe.
