"Explaining the Outcome: Ireland's Revolution Revisited" Revolutions can be bloody events. The struggles of former colonies emerging into independence in the 20th century sometimes ended with devastated populations, ruined societies and economies, and despotic regimes. Ireland's revolution, from 1912-1923, somehow ended differently - the defeated side from the civil war peacefully assumed power through a free and fair election less than a decade after the war. Unlike other emerging European states in the interwar period, Ireland's democracy survived revolutionary war, civil war, and the Great Depression. This presentation will look at several of the dominant narratives and explanations for the outcome of the conflict and offer insights from other perspectives to help explain why Ireland's revolution more closely resembles the American Revolution than some of the bloodier independence struggles of the 20th century.
