Here's how to find which cylinder is at TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke, ready to fire, without using the distributor rotor direction as a reference. This method can be used to verify the cylinder which is ready to have the valves adjusted (opposite the overlaping valves). It can also be used to determine and/or confirm which cylinder the distributor rotor is pointing to in case of an improperly installed drive gear or when installing a new or different distributor. Valve covers will need to be removed for this procedure, but it is a failsafe method for confirming which cylinder is firing at tdc. Set the pulley / crankshaft to the notch. depending on which type of pulley you have and how many notches it has, this is a good starting reference point. . Turn the crankshaft back and forth a little bit. Look for the valves overlapping in their travel. The opposite side is the cylinder at TDC. Example: if #3 valves are overlapping, #1 is at tdc firing. I hope my talking in the video explains this clearly, and that the video shows what I'm blabbing about. While a 36hp engine is shown, this is an accurate way of checking an air cooled Volkswagen engine.
