Sir Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs is a staple of the BBC's Last Night of the Proms and a favorite patriotic piece of the concertgoing British public. The medley was arranged in 1905 to celebrate the centenary of the British naval victory at Trafalgar, foiling Napoleonic ambitions to invade the British isles, as well as ushering in a new era of British naval domination. The fantasia is comprised of nine portions (though many concerts omit the first two parts) which detail the departure of the fleet for Trafalgar, the battle itself, it's aftermath, and triumphant homecoming. This recording features the work in it's full original arrangement. The nine parts are as follows: 1. Bugle Calls (Admiral's Salute, Action, General Assembly, Landing Party, Prepare to Ram, and finally Quick, Double, Extend and Close.) 2. The Anchor's Weighed 3. The Saucy Arethusa 4. Tom Bowling 5. Jack's the Lad (Sailor's Hornpipe) 6. Farewell and Adieu, you Spanish Ladies 7. Home, Sweet Home 8. See, The Conqu'ring Hero Comes 9. Rule, Britannia Composer: Various, in an arrangement by Henry Wood Conductor: Roger Norrington Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra
