🌍💧 What is the Curve Number (CN)? The Curve Number is a hydrologic parameter developed by the USDA NRCS to estimate 🌧️➡️💦 how much rainfall becomes runoff. It depends on land use, soil type, and hydrologic condition: 🔽 Low CN = more infiltration (forests, sandy soils) 🔼 High CN = more runoff (urban areas, clay soils) 🟤 Hydrologic Soil Groups (HSGs) Soils are divided into 4 groups based on infiltration capacity: 🅰️ Group A: High infiltration (sand, gravel) 🅱️ Group B: Moderate infiltration (sandy loam) 🅲 Group C: Low infiltration (clay loam) 🅳 Group D: Very low infiltration (clay, shallow water table) 🌳🏙️ Land Use / Land Cover (LULC) LULC shows the surface type, such as forest, agriculture, grassland, or urban areas. It strongly influences whether rain is absorbed or runs off. 🗂️ How to Create a Curve Number Shapefile 1️⃣ Overlay your Hydrologic Soil Groups (HSG) map with the Land Use Land Cover (LULC) map in GIS. 2️⃣ Each polygon gets assigned both a soil group + land use type. 3️⃣ Use the official NRCS CN tables 📑 to find the correct CN value for each combination. 4️⃣ Save the result as a Curve Number shapefile for hydrologic modeling and watershed analysis. ✨ This process lets you build a spatially accurate CN layer, reflecting both soil infiltration capacity 🟤 and land cover characteristics 🌳🏙️. Perfect for hydrology studies, watershed management, and flood modeling! 🚀 🔗 Full Video: • FLOOD RISK MAPPING USING GIS AND MULTI-CRI... 🔗 Link to article: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3263/8/8/275 Rincón, D.; Khan, U.T.; Armenakis, C.
