Function: It acts as the main relay center for ascending sensory information between subcortical structures and the cerebral cortex, except for the sense of smell. Composition: ---------------------- The thalamus is divided into various nuclear groups and regions, each with distinct functions and connections: Lateral Nuclear Group: ----------------------------------- Dorsal Subgroup: Includes the lateral dorsal thalamic nucleus involved in spatial learning and memory. Posterior Subgroup: Consists of the pulvinar nucleus, which contributes to visual perception and regulation of visual attention. Ventral Subgroup: Comprises the ventral anterior thalamic nucleus involved in planning movement, and the ventral lateral thalamic nucleus responsible for coordinating movement. Anterior Nuclear Group: ------------------------------------- Contains the anterior thalamic nuclei, which receive input from the mammillary nucleus, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus. It is involved in memory, spatial navigation, and learning, contributing to the limbic system. Also includes the medial geniculate thalamic nucleus, which receives input from the superior olive and inferior colliculus, contributing to the processing of auditory information. Blood Supply: ---------------------- The blood supply to the thalamus primarily comes from branches of the posterior cerebral artery (P1 and P2 segments). The specific arteries supplying the thalamus include: Posterior thalamosubthalamic paramedian arteries: Supply the ventral, intralaminar, and medial nuclear groups. Thalamogeniculate arteries: Supply the ventral nuclear group of the thalamus and medial geniculate thalamic nucleus.
