Tank on hill STORYLINE: The local economy of Panjshir Valley has been severely damaged by a succession of wars over 20 years. This was an industrialised area producing building materials, cotton and clothing, but the war with Russia and the current internal conflict between northern Alliance and Taliban soldiers have meant that many factory buildings have been bombed and cannot be rebuilt. Infrastructure has been affected to the extent that the majority of people live without electricity and rely on rivers for drinking water. Many living in the villages of Jaball el Suraj and Shapol, 70km north of Kabul, have been forced to move from working in factories to more traditional industries, such as carpet weaving. But even the few supplies needed for this cottage industry are restricted because they can no longer be obtained from Taliban-controlled areas.
