Some of the other components of this system are : The Cooling water pumps The Heat Exchangers also known as the LT Coolers The Sea Water Overboard valve of course, the Sea Suction filters also known as the sea chest, And last but not the least, the associated piping along with the controllers for regulating the parameters. The sea water system onboard usually consists of 2 sea suctions. One is high and the other is low sea chest. Visually you can't tell much difference between the two. They are called that way because of the different heights at which they're fitted on to the ship's hull. In simple words, the Sea Chests actually act as a gate so that sea water enters the engine room through pipelines & valves in a controlled manner But along with the sea water, also comes a lot of unwanted marine organism example fishes, Planktons, shells etc. These are problematic because once they enter into the sea water system, they cause fluctuation in the sea water pressure, in severe cases even causing erosion of the impeller on the sea water pumps. Also, they can chock up the central coolers, causing heat imbalance, thereby causing the engine parameters to exceed its limit. Thus it is highly essential to filter out all these marine organisms to maintain the sea water system's cooling efficiency. To access the sea chest filter, we need to first remove the sea chest lid. But before doing this we have to ensure that there sea water isolating valves are holding and that there is no pressure remaining in the sea chest. This is done by opening and then keeping open the vent valve. Once it's confirmed that it's isolated and de-pressurized, the securing nuts and bolts on the sea chest lid can be removed. Note that it is always a good practice to keep 3 or 4 of the nuts and bolts loosened but still in place. I would say at least 2! Depending on the design, the lid may incorporate the sacrificial Anodes which are part of the Marine Growth Prevention System, OR these anodes could be housed in a separate sea chest of their own. Once cleaned, put the filter back inside, drop the lid, put the bolts and nuts, tighten it, open the water valve, purge the air out from the sea chest, check for leaks and if all is satisfactory, then the sea chest can be put back in use OR kept on stand by as required.
