Longue Vue House and Gardens, New Orleans, Louisiana Builders of Longue Vue, Edith and Edgar Stern picked the home's 8 acre site as newlyweds in 1921 - the story of Longue Vue house and gardens had begun. He was a businessman from New Orleans, the son of German immigrants; she was from Chicago, the daughter of renowned businessman, Julius Rosenwald. The couple met in 1920 and married in 1921. Soon thereafter, they began developing the Longue Vue property at the edge of New Orleans. From the beginning, the Sterns worked with famed landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and the Platt architects to produce their vision. Shipman began designing Longue Vue’s present gardens in 1935 and continued her work until her death in 1950. Longue Vue opened as an independent non-profit museum back in 1980, several months before Edith’s death. Today’s Longue Vue is a national historic landmark. A must see in NOLA. Of note, the Sterns pursued a range of meaningful civic and artistic causes over their lives.
