During the 1820s and 1830s, alcohol consumption reached new heights and was especially devastating for wage earners, who could ill afford its costs. Whiskey sold for twenty-five cents a gallon, making it cheaper than beer, wine, coffee, tea, or milk. Temperance advocates pointed to alcohol's deleterious health effects and blamed it for instigating domestic abuse, public disorder, financial ruin, and widespread moral decay. The temperance movement was the most successful social reform and would later lead to the prohibition act (revoked during the Great Depression).
