The Ladder: Journeys in Platonic Mysticism, Episode 16 In this special episode, the hosts do something a bit different: they live-demo Khora, Palinode’s evolving “search engine for philosophy done otherwise,” to show how it can model philosophical conversation, inquiry, and relationship through a navigable web of concepts, texts, and creators. Starting with a search for Platonism, they zoom out to read the emerging constellation of nodes and pathways, using the platform not as a summary-machine but as a map for thinking: where ideas cluster, where the tradition’s pressure-points lie, and where one’s own questions can become new routes through the archive. From there, the episode becomes a practical illustration of “Platonic mysticism” as method: moving from negative theology to Plato’s Parmenides, from presence/absence in aesthetics (the frame and what lies outside it) to Plotinus against the Gnostics, and outward into contemporary contributors and resources (e.g., Edward Butler’s work on polytheism). Along the way, we see how Khora enables users to add and contest connections, linking, for example, mystical experience to embodied transcendence (Socrates’ famed stillness), or bringing demiurge, creativity, and even coding into the same conceptual neighborhood as divine madness and the discipline of “not-knowing.” The result is a vision of philosophical learning as participatory: an open, revisable commons where the web of ideas grows stronger as communities argue, refine, and build it together.
