William Hinzman is best known for his appearance as the first zombie in the original 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, as well as directing a sequel titled Flesh Eater, which offered it's own unique approach to the origins of the famed zombie. William also taught film and digital video at Tom Savini's school in Pittsburgh, and has produced, directed, and shot a number of other feature films, documentaries, and television pieces. His daughter is also a filmmaker, and he had maintained a good relationship with director George Romero, having married his secretary from the original Latent Image film days. My first experience with Mr. Hinzman was very pleasant. I met his as a convention goer and a fan, and asked if he had a copy of Flesh Eater I could purchase for him to sign. He said he did not. Later in the weekend, he approached me and handed me a copy of the DVD, having remembered my name as well. With all the people he met that weekend, it really stuck with me that he was so personal and friendly. I would assume that many fans have similar stories of fond encounters. This started out as an interview for a documentary on the zombie genre I've been working on for some time. This interview was obtained at a Chiller convention in 2009, I believe. When Mr. Hinzman passed away, I felt that his interview was worth viewing, and wanted to share it. He had a lot of intelligent, inspiring things to say about independent filmmaking and the zombie genre. The short snippets of his interview that would make it's way into the documentary wouldn't do it justice. Rest in peace, Bill, and thank you.
