City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia, was built in 1929 and housed the University of Richmond football team from 1929 until 2009. The stadium has had its fair share of tenants including the Richmond Rebels ACFL team and the current sole hometeam, the Richmond Kickers. The Richmond Kickers are a soccer club that competes in USL League One (USL1). The club was established in 1993 and began play that same year as a United States Interregional Soccer League expansion team, which at the time was the fourth tier of soccer in the United States. Despite the aging facility, the club is one of the most well-attended USL League One teams, with an average of 3,000 to 4,000 fans per match. City Stadium has a capacity of 22,611, but only the West stands (6,000) are used for Kickers matches because the East stands are structurally corroding. The team has conveniently decorated the abandoned bleachers with sponsored tarps. The Bermuda Grass used on the pitch has also been known throughout the soccer world as being some of the best in existence, thanks to the integrated care given by the stadium's groundcrew.
