THE POLITICS OF CULTS | POLITICS IN WESTERN DEMOCRACY

A cult is a system of devotion directed towards a particular figure in religion, politics, the military, or even in business. Political cults are certainly not new they appeared in ancient history and will continue to develop in the future. Today, there is an increasing polarization of political discourse across the world and politics in many western democracies became similar to that of a cult. It entails the use of propaganda and lies in order to control the minds of the masses and ask for devotion in exchange for meaning. Political cults provide easy answers to complex problems, demonstrate a lack of toleration, and always find someone to blame to the point that, given the right conditions, a democratic society can give way to an authoritarian form of government. This inability to perceive a diversity of views is a mark of cult thinking. Becoming immersed in cult thinking is a slippery slope, and many can be susceptible to it without realizing it. If policymakers, diplomats, mediators and citizens are to avoid engaging in polarizing debates and supporting narrow agendas they are effectively joining political cults. So, there is a need to become more educated about this phenomenon. There is no way to successfully deal with this challenge than by learning more about how to avoid the cult trap, and contribute to a healthier political environment. We don't have to be in exclusive clubs to feel as if we were chosen to read this book, to listen to this lecture or speech or follow a charismatic politician or leader in order to have a meaningful existence, to become successful, overcome our traumatic past and live better lives in the future. No politician or leader has special secrets qualities or knowledge. The truth can shine through when we share our experiences and ideas and becomes a public domain that is meant to free all of us.
