During the interwar years, the Soviet Union faced the challenge of defending a vast territory against well-fortified enemies. Military planners concluded that future wars would require not only speed and manpower, but overwhelming artillery power capable of destroying hardened defenses. This documentary explores the development and battlefield role of the 203-mm howitzer model 1931, widely known as the B-4. Development began in 1926, and by 1931 a working prototype had been completed. After extensive testing, the weapon entered production as one of the most powerful artillery systems of its time. The B-4 was designed to break what ordinary guns could not. Its massive shells were used to demolish concrete bunkers, fortified buildings, and heavily defended positions during World War II. Although not intended as a direct anti-tank weapon, its immense explosive force proved devastating to any target caught within its blast radius. From major sieges to the final assaults deep inside Germany, the B-4 became a symbol of Soviet heavy artillery doctrine—slow, methodical, and relentless. This video examines how the weapon was designed, how it was used in combat, and why it earned a lasting place in military history as one of the defining siege guns of the Second World War.
