Parassala Ravi, Principal of the Palakkad Music College and Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.K.Murthy further helped him develop into a complete mridangam player. He is one of the most versatile percussionists of the day and can play the tabla, Western drums, chenda, and the Congo drums. He won the first prize in the All India Radio mridangam competitions in 1974 and the Kerala Sangeeetha Nataka Academy award for three consecutive years.
