Welcome back to my channel! In today's video, we are diving into a very rare but potentially fatal condition known as Lemierre's syndrome. This syndrome is a complication of acute oropharyngeal infections like pharyngitis or tonsillitis that can lead to serious complications. I will walk you through the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for this condition. Lemierre's syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum or fusiform bacilli passing from the tonsillar vein into the internal jugular vein, leading to septic thrombophlebitis. This can result in distant metastatic anaerobic septicemia with significant mortality rates. The clinical presentation often includes trismus, pain behind the angle of the jaw, and neck swelling. If you suspect Lemierre's syndrome in a patient with an upper aerodigestive tract infection, it is crucial to act quickly. Treatment involves antibiotics for six weeks, typically penicillin with metronidazole or Coamoxiclav. In some cases, anticoagulation may be necessary if there is evidence of spreading thrombophlebitis.
