Supporters cheering 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jose Bove, anti-globalisation campaigner: "This is not an action the people from the United States, it is a decision, it is an action against the government of the United States and so many times I went to the United States since two years and a lot of farmers agree with us and consumers and citizens from the United States that this is a global fight from people from all over the world." 14. SOUNDBITE: (French) Claudine Costes, McDonald's customer: "McDonalds is not evil, it is rather symbolic of an image of America that Bove supporters want to destroy. I understand why we don't always support American food but McDonald's has a lot of advantages - it is cheap, it is quick and practical and kids love it, so I don't understand why they are going after McDonald's like this. It is surprising to me." STORYLINE: Militant French farmer Jose Bove and a thousand supporters returned to the same McDonald's restaurant on Sunday that they helped dismantle two years ago. This time Bove, who is a sheep farmer, and fellow members of the Farmers' Confederation rode tractors into the southern French town of Millau and surrounded the fast food restaurant before addressing a crowd. The protest came on the second anniversary of the attack on the Millau McDonald's - a high-profile demonstration against globalisation which led to Bove's conviction in a French court. About 70 police officers cordoned off the parking area to prevent the protesters, many wearing shirts that read "The world is not merchandise," from approaching the McDonald's. Large signs that read "closed due to threats" were hung on the restaurant's windows. Bove and his allies vowed to continue their protest as long as necessary to gain support from the French government for farmers hit by a US surcharge against Roquefort cheese, which is made in a nearby village. The protesters have targeted McDonald's as a symbol of how unchecked globalisation can trample local culture, including French cuisine. In March, an appeals court in nearby Montpellier upheld a decision ordering Bove to spend three months in jail for vandalising the Millau McDonald's. Bove remains free pending appeal. He has also been fined for briefly holding three Agriculture Ministry officials captive in the town of Rodez in 1999.
