Hand and Finger Pain: Common Causes and Symptoms Explained Join this channel to support us! / @nabilebraheim Common Hand Problems and Their Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, causing pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and fingers, specifically affecting the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger. If left untreated, it can lead to muscle atrophy in the hand and fingers. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome This condition causes pain and numbness in the small finger and half of the ring finger, originating from compression of the ulnar nerve at the medial elbow near the funny bone. Symptoms can radiate below the elbow, causing numbness and tingling in the fourth and fifth fingers. Osteoarthritis (OA) OA affects the interphalangeal joints of the fingers and the thumb's carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. Over time, the cartilage deteriorates, leading to pain, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) RA causes pain and swelling at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of the fingers and wrists. This autoimmune condition leads to progressive joint damage, including cartilage loss and tendon ruptures, resulting in deformities like ulnar drift. Trigger Finger Trigger finger occurs when the tendon of the finger, including the thumb, becomes inflamed, causing the finger to remain bent. Patients may feel a clicking or locking sensation as they attempt to move the finger from flexion to extension. De Quervain's Syndrome This condition results in pain on the radial side of the wrist, making it difficult to grasp objects, especially with the thumb. It is caused by inflammation of the tendon sheath, which controls thumb movement. Thumb Arthritis (CMC Joint Arthritis) Thumb arthritis affects the base of the thumb, leading to pain during movement, especially gripping and pinching. It results from wear and tear of the cartilage within the CMC joint. Felon and Flexor Tenosynovitis Felon presents with swelling of the entire finger, while flexor tenosynovitis results in pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the finger. Signs of infection or inflammation may require immediate attention. Differentiating De Quervain's Syndrome and Arthritis De Quervain's syndrome can be tested using the Finkelstein test. The patient makes a fist with the thumb inside the fingers and bends the wrist towards the little finger. A sharp local pain indicates De Quervain's. For arthritis, the grinding sensation between bones suggests CMC joint arthritis.
