It’s Sunday the 1st of September 2024, and I visited Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. For some context, Bristol Temple Meads was opened in 1840 and is terminus of the Great Western Mainline. By June of 1841, the GWML would be completed between London and Bristol. The station would be rebuilt in the 1870s, adding the through platforms that would open in stages between 1874 and 1878. By the 1930s, the GWR planned to expand the station further from 9 platforms to 15. This further rebuilding work would begin in 1930 and be completed by 1935. The original Brunel designed terminating platforms would be closed in 1965 and is currently a part of the stations car park and serves as secondary entrance. Bristol Parkway would be opened in 1971 and would become a junction between the South Wales and Great Western mainlines, allowing for passengers to interchange between said lines. In 2017, under the GWML electrification scheme, the line through Bristol Parkway to Cardiff Central would be electrified. Due to delays, the first all electric service would run between London Paddington and Cardiff in 2019.
