Many people suffer from nasal congestion, nasal drippage, post nasal drip, they go through a box of Kleenex all the time. These people have a problem with the way that their nose regulates blood flow. There are nerves inside of our nose to control how much swelling exists in our nose. These nerves are irritated by allergy particles, and sometimes they're just on the fritz and they don't work properly. When these nerves aren't working properly, the nose can get very swollen. There are some growths in the nose called turbinates, which are little growths to help humidify the air that we breathe into our lungs. When these turbinates are swollen, it makes it difficult to breathe, we have a lot of nasal congestion, and we can have lots of excess mucus which can drip out the front or down the back and irritate our throats. When those fail, though, the next step traditionally was to go to surgery to shrink these down and make the swelling improve. This does work, but it's more invasive and you do have some pain after the surgery. Now we have a new device, which is a cryoablation device. This device uses freezing power to freeze the nerves that control these turbinates and how they swell. It's a simple procedure that can be done in the office; it only takes a few minutes to do once your nose is numb. After the procedure, some people have a headache for 20 to 30 minutes that might feel like a brain freeze. Once that goes away, over a few weeks of healing, people get a much better result with less nasal congestion, nasal drainage and nasal drippage. That's because when we freeze those nerves, we cause an injury that makes those nerves reset themselves. As the nerves reset the nose is not inappropriately congested. It doesn't get those inappropriate signals to become inflamed and release extra mucus. So by freezing them, we allow the nose a chance to reset itself and let you breathe better.
