You’re lounging at your hotel pool in Las Vegas, cocktail in hand, and then... BOOM! A legit atomic bomb exploding up in the distance. Crazy, huh? Well, that’s exactly what was happening in Las Vegas in the 1950s. Vegas was the ultimate... and I mean ULTIMATE... viewing party for... nuclear explosions! From 1951 to 1962, the US government was lighting up the desert sky with 100 atomic bombs at the nearby Nevada Test Site. It sounds wild now, but back then people were obsessed with everything atomic. From atomic-themed drinks, toys, diners to atomic-inspired fashion shows, the atomic age was more than just a scientific breakthrough; it was a cultural phenomenon. Even today, remnants of this atomic obsession still linger in Las Vegas. Crazy right? Do you think viewing these atomic bombs was safe, even from a distance?
