Code Officer Warns Pedicab Operators at Beach

A Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officer from the Vendors Task Force issues advisals to Pedicab operators at Santa Monica Beach on Friday, May 27, 2022. Pedicabs are not permitted on the Santa Monica Beach Bike Path or on Ocean Front Walk. There has been discussions on allowing pedicabs on the Bike path once the bike path improvement project was completed. There was a motion that passed unanimously during a council meeting on May 24, from Councilmember Negrete and seconded by Councilmember Brock that the City Council direct the City Manager and City Attorney to return to the Council with an ordinance amending Section 3.12.600 of the Santa Monica Municipal Code to allow a limited number of non-electric pedicabs on the beach bike-path. The newly formed task force has been instrumental in helping to educate and enforce the City’s safety laws and ensuring safe sidewalk vending practices across the City. The multi-department Unpermitted Vendors Task force consists of Santa Monica Police Officers, Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers, Santa Monica Fire Department personnel, Santa Monica Harbor Patrol Officers, Public Works, and private security guards.
