But Martha looks on helplessly unprepared and ill informed by the Doctor about what should happen should he fall in love as his Human self. But stubborn and unconvinced for a time John pursues Joan and they fall hopelessly in love. It's a sad tale and a journey that is doomed from the moment they lose their hearts to one another.
