As my last stop in Colorado, I headed to Leadville to camp for a few nights before climbing Colorado's highest fourteener (mountains with summits higher than 14,000 feet in elevation). Mount Elbert is not only Colorado's highest peak but also the second highest peak in the contiguous US standing at 14,440 ft (Mt. Whitney being the highest). I approached from the East Ridge trail and my hike was 16 miles with 5,000 feet of elevation gain.
