January is always a quieter month in the garden. Too wet, too cold, too unsettled to do very much — and yet, it’s often when the real growing season begins. In this video I’m taking stock before the sowing starts. Putting up bird feeders for the coldest weeks of the year, measuring the kitchen garden beds to understand what space I actually have, sorting through old and new seed packets, and finally washing the greenhouse — the place where so much of the season will begin. There’s no planting yet. No rush. Just small, practical jobs that help bring a bit of clarity and calm before everything starts to fill up again. This is the kind of work that doesn’t always feel productive in the moment, but quietly makes everything that comes next easier.
