Hey Shrimp Keepers, I wanted to go over a topic that I get the most push back on and that is driftwood in the aquarium and, more importantly, in a shrimp tank. Today, I want to go over the question: Is driftwood necessary for shrimp tanks? In short, my answer to this question is yes. There are many reason that driftwood is useful for breeding freshwater shrimp. Driftwood add many benefits to the habitat for freshwater shrimp. First, I use mainly Malaysian driftwood. Malaysian driftwood is the best type of wood for aquariums and shrimp tanks in my opinion. The wood instantly sinks which makes it ideal for hobbyists that don't want to weight the wood down with rocks. Also, Malaysian driftwood has had the best overall success as far as shrimp health goes. I've seen greater breeding success rates in the tank I use Malaysian driftwood in. Second, it is important to understand that shrimp feed off of biofilm and algae. Most of us prefer to have a clean aquarium or shrimp tank. We don't want the glass covered in algae so often times we scrape it off. When we do that, we eliminate a natural food source for shrimp. Driftwood on the other hand is nearly impossible to remove algae from. Therefore, the driftwood is providing a place for algae to thrive creating a place for natural food to grow for the shrimp. Also, driftwood is know for the growth of biofilm. often times when driftwood is in an aquarium without inhabitants, it will grow a molding looking fungus from it. Although, this is not fungus, it is actually biofilm which is great for shrimp. Check out the video I did a long time ago on driftwood: • How to Breed Shrimp: Three Things Every Ta... Driftwood general has a ton of nooks an crannies in it. Therefore, it is a great place for shrimp to hide and find shelter after a molt or when they are babies. Any way to reduce stress on shrimp is a good thing. The more hiding places, the better. Driftwood also leach tannins into the water. These tannins provide so many benefits for shrimp: antioxidants, minerals, etc. Besides the water color, it is an all around win for shrimp. The only warning with driftwood is that driftwood does decay in the water. If you use too much, it can easily brake down too fast and cause a spike in nitrates which can kill off a colony of shrimp Therefore, it is important to use appropriate sized pieces for each tank or to ensure you keep up with water changes.
