We have a petsafe brand invisible fence around our property. My wife and I came home from visiting family and our pet fence controller was beeping, indicating a fault/cut in the underground loop. Watching several videos on the topic, I decided there was a much better and faster way, if you have a rough idea of where the wire is buried. A binary search is a very simple and efficient way of locating the cut. A binary search is also called a “half-interval” search, and that’s more descriptive. The idea is simple, test at the half way point and decide which direction the fault is in. Split that section in half and test again. Continue until you zero in on the fault. In just TWO STEPS/TESTS you’ll eliminate ¾ of the fence to test. Here’s how it works: 1) You connect a tone tool to the loop, and confirm that it’s working. 2) You go to the midway point of the loop and test that the loop is working a. If it is working at the midpoint, you know the break is further along the loop b. If it is NOT working at the midpoint, you know the break is between you and the start of the loop. c. Just like that you’ve already eliminated HALF the work of locating the break. d. Go to the midpoint of the next section and test again. i. If the loop is working, you know the break is further along ii. If the loop is NOT working, you know the break is between you and start of the loop. iii. In TWO STEPS you’ve eliminated ¾ of the loop from testing! e. Continue until you find the break 3) Once you find the break do a simple repair with dryconn connectors The tone tool that I used appears to have been discontinued. (I bought it in late 2014) There are a few similar tools on Amazon. I have not tried or tested any of them. Tools used: Dryconn small connectors: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DryConn-S... Or https://www.lowes.com/pd/DryConn-Aqua... Boundary Wire: https://www.homedepot.com/p/PetSafe-5... Cable and Pipe Locator: General CL10 – discontinued I have not tested these, but similar looking locators are here: This looks identical to the one I have: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B... Slightly cheaper, but appears to have similar functionality: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...
