I spent a day exploring the rugged highlands of Kintamani and the world-famous Penglipuran Village. This itinerary is a must-do if you want to swap the beach for cool mountain air and authentic Balinese architecture. I started the morning at Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the second most important temple in Bali. Dedicated to the goddess of lakes and rivers, this stunning temple complex sits on the caldera rim. I walked through the intricate split gates (Candi Bentar) and took in the view of the 11-tiered Meru shrines against the backdrop of the mountains. Next, I headed to the Kintamani viewpoint to face off with the mighty Mount Batur. This active volcano is surrounded by a massive 13km wide caldera and the shimmering Lake Batur. I stopped at a cliffside spot to capture the contrast of the black lava fields against the lush greenery. If you’re a fan of high-impact landscapes, the scale of this volcano is unbeatable. I finished the day at Penglipuran Village, often cited as one of the cleanest villages in the world. This is a living community that has preserved its traditional "Bali Aga" layout for centuries. I strolled down the main stone-paved path, admiring the perfectly symmetrical bamboo gates and identical house rows. I also wandered into the bamboo forest at the edge of the village, which felt like stepping into a peaceful, green cathedral.
