Part Stealth Bomber, Part Tarantula - Oh sure, Trek, Giant, Cannondale and Specialized have cemented their place in the world of biking. But back in 1998, K2 was a serious contender for the throne. Enter the K2 Proflex 2000, a beast of a machine with the looks of, well, a beast! Priced in the $1,000 range back in the late 90's, this Proflex looked like no other ride. Heck, it still has no visual equivalent to this day. One glance at the bike and we're struck by those front mandibles. Like a tarantula, the front fork pierces forward with its hinged design. A novel approach to an age-old problem. Looking down the frame we find stealth bomber angles galore peaking at the rear suspension fulcrum. This rear suspension system is buoyed with beefy arms built more for a tank than a bike. Due to these overbuilt parts, the bike weighed in at 30 lbs and was heavier than other bikes. However, those who bought one swore by their durability and bang for the buck. Today we can just marvel at the unique design and wonder, anybody want to ride a tarantula? The Proflex competed against other full suspension mountain bike offerings from Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Fuji, Raleigh, Scott, Gary Fisher, GT, Klein, Rocky Mountain and Kona, among others.
