Full Lecture on the 21st Century Flaneur

The flâneur is an archetype whose habits consist of strolling at a deliberately leisurely pace while collecting and recording urban images. Poet and essayist Charles Baudelaire, whose writings ushered the concept of flâneurism into European critical discourse, called it a “profession.” Combining observation and watchfulness, flânuerism allows the person, as contemporary social geographer Rob Shields states from a late 20th century perspective, “to be drawn by intriguing sights or to dawdle in interesting places.” Being incognito and anonymous are central as the flâneur investigates urbanity, but in the early 21st century, by my account, this exploration often leads to colorful interactions with strangers and security officers.
