CID Speaker Series Presents Valeria Saggiomo, Lecturer in International Cooperation for Development at University of Naples and CID Visiting Scholar. Valeria discussed her research on the importance of “sentiment” in aid effectiveness. The talk explored the question of why some development projects succeed and others fail. The narrative brought the audience into the mechanisms of development processes, and into the lives of the people the speaker encountered during her work in Somalia. Rather than failures, Valeria observed success cases of diaspora associations that managed to promote change and welfare in their origin villages. With the audience, she discussed how diaspora associations operate as development actors, and how much their emotional motivation – or sentiment – impacts their activism and project success. Valeria finally reflected on whether the time has come to include “sentiments” within current development projects’ evaluation approaches, along with other (more) objectively verifiable indicators.
