My name is Mary Killackey. I'm a transplant surgeon by training and currently the chair of the department of surgery at Tulane. I think what really inspired me to become a doctor was knowing that I was going to have authentic relationships pretty quickly after meeting my patients. That was really important to me. Why did you become a doctor? It's hard to describe being a doctor. It's such a privilege. I think that's really what it is. And it really defines you as a person. It's not just a job that you go to and you put on this hat and you do something. You incorporate into who you are and your being. And you get to give someone a new organ so it makes you feel great every time you do an operation. What is your approach to patient care? I think it is so important to be authentic and to be yourself and let them recognize that I am also a person. I am not this doctor coming in to tell you what is going to happen and I know all this. I think it's essential to figure out how to explain what you do in that moment you have to make them feel confident in you. What is most rewarding about your job? Patients are your family. I think that is so important that they trust me. The fact that patients are willing to come into the office and tell you the most intimate things about their life and to be able to do that is a privilege and I am grateful for that because I have authentic interactions every single day.
