How are Non Union & Malunion of Fractures managed? - Dr. Veera Reddy Jayar

Non-union of a fracture means the fracture which has not healed in a specified amount of time generally needed for that fracture to heal. Whereas malunion means the fracture has healed but it has not healed in a correct position and it is causing deformity and functional problems to the patient. If there is a non-union then we generally identify the cause for that particular non-union. It could be patient factors or local causes. We identify the particular cause and treat that and may be the patient needs a revision surgery to enhance its healing and some bone stimulators as well. Whereas in malunion some of the places like the proximal shoulders or humerus the malunions don’t have functional problems. Whereas some areas like the forearm or the femur or the tibia if it is a grossly malunited fracture they do have a functional problem. So we need to do the revision surgery and correct the deformity so the patient’s malunion is corrected and we treat their function.
