Kenny Safford was one of the most respected drivers and mechanics in drag racing history, even if his name isn’t as widely known as legends like Don Garlits or Don Prudhomme. Growing up in Hollywood during the golden age of hot rodding, Safford quickly became part of Southern California’s early drag racing scene. From the Road Kings car club to the legendary Bakersfield March Meet, he built a reputation as both a brilliant tuner and a fearless driver who earned the respect of the sport’s biggest names. In the early 1960s Safford co-created the famous Sour Sisters Top Fuel dragster, an Oldsmobile-powered machine competing in a world dominated by Chrysler Hemis. Despite constant engine failures, the team stunned the sport by running nearly 200 mph and finishing among the top fuel teams in the country. Later, driving the revolutionary B&M Torkmaster, Safford pushed the limits of speed even further, confirming a 214 mph pass at Lions Drag Strip during drag racing’s explosive mid-1960s horsepower war. Safford’s career spanned Top Fuel and Funny Car, including a famous moment at the 1971 NHRA Winternationals when he was supposed to face Don Garlits in the historic final that ushered in the rear-engine Top Fuel era. Injuries eventually forced him out of the cockpit, but his legacy continued through engine building, mentorship, and the recreation of the Sour Sisters dragster decades later. Kenny Safford may not always appear in the headlines, but throughout drag racing history he was the racer that other racers trusted. #DragRacing #KennySafford #NHRAHistory #TopFuel #FunnyCar #MotorsportHistory #VintageDragRacing #DragRacingLegends #ClassicMotorsports #BurnoutSociety
