In this video, we explore the life and legacy of Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini (1900–1989) — the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Born in Khomeyn, Iran, Khomeini rose from a religious student studying the Quran and Islamic sciences to becoming one of the most influential Shia clerics of the 20th century. He became an Ayatollah, a Marja' (source of emulation), and a leading scholar in Twelver Shi’ism, authoring more than 40 books on Islamic law, philosophy, and political theory. During his years in Bursa and later in Najaf, he developed and articulated his theory of Guardianship of the Jurist (Wilayat al-Faqih), which later became the foundation of Iran’s political system. On February 11, 1979 — known in Iran as 22 Bahman — the Iranian Revolution succeeded, overthrowing the monarchy and establishing the Islamic Republic of Iran. Khomeini became the country’s Supreme Leader and remained in power until his death in 1989. Khomeini was named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year in 1979 due to his global impact. He remains a deeply influential and controversial figure — praised by supporters as a champion of Islamic revival and independence, and criticized by others for political repression, human rights concerns, and controversial international positions.
