By: Ketemba Tjipepa Aranos Primary School community hostel is facing a shortage of beds, mattresses, and accommodation space, among others. The hostel, which is subsidised by the government, accommodates 90 learners who live far from school and whose parents work at surrounding farms. The hostel has four rooms with 32 beds. As a result, there are two or three learners sleeping on one bed. Aranos Primary School principal, Adanasius Araeb, added that hostel employees share accommodation with the learners because there is a lack of accommodation. '' Yes it is true what the matrons or the hostel workers are saying, there is no accommodation for them here at school and also in the hostel because of the space. This hostel was donated by friends from outside, what they built was actually meant for learners only. The workers are volunteers; they are rendering voluntary services to the hostel,” said Araeb. A volunteer who has been at the hostel for 21 years, Willemina Afrika, revealed the challenges they are facing. "The beds here are broken and two or three learners have to share beds. There are not enough mattresses. We only had toilets built during the Covid-19 pandemic since the hostel was built in 2003. We don't have our own kitchen. This hostel has nothing, we sleep among the learners,” said Afrika. Aranos Constituency regional councillor, Salmon Boois, confirmed that there is a lack of services in three community hostels at the town, and they are working towards raising funds to upgrade them. "We have a community hostel which is run with funds parents are collecting, and we also have a lot of shortages there. We have three community hostels, I have lobbied funds to assist Aranos primary school, and I am still lobbying funds to also assist the other three community hostels," said Boois.
