World Scholar's Cup @ Yale Debate Clip: KYSM & Bucharest vs Hong Kong (WSC Junior Division)

This video shows clips from one of the debates held during the World Scholar's Cup Tournament of Champion at Yale University on Saturday afternoon November 16, 2013. Without fast forwarding the clip to the end, can you guess which is is the winning team? The intention was not only to attend and experience the debate by these brilliant and wonderful young scholars, but also to record the entire session for audiences who were not able to attend the debate. In addition, future contestants can also use the video as part of their preparations. Unfortunately the were a few hickups during the recording. The cameraman forgot to turn the camera on during the first few minutes of the session, and throughout the recording, there were several phone calls and text messages which disrupted the recording process. That's the main reason why one should not use cell phone to record a video, although carrying one device instead of 2 is extremely convenient. The topic for this debate is "Globalization Has Been Good For Music". The topic was not given to the contestants in advance, instead they were given the topic as soon as they entered the room. Each of the affirmative and negative teams would then have 15 minutes to research and / or discuss the topic among the team members. Each person would have 4 minutes to present his / her arguments. Each members of the negative team is given 1 minute to prepare the rebuttal. During the debate, no one, including the audience is allowed to leave or enter the room. Keyboards that produce noises are also not allowed. Members of the affirmative team are mix - 2 members from Kolej Yayasan Saad KYSM and 1 member from Bucharest, Romania. Members of the negative teams are all from a school in Hong Kong. About World Scholar's Cup: The World Scholar's Cup (WSC) is an international team academic tournament with students participating from over 40 countries. The competition was founded by DemiDec, in particular by Daniel Berdichevsky, DemiDec's president, in 2006. The WSC has attracted what it calls "a global community of future scholars and leaders", and promotes that it allows participants to "discover strengths and skills you never knew you had." Tournament Format: A team for the WSC is composed three students, though students are permitted to work individually or in groups of hundred. The teams are usually made up of students from the same school, but that's not always the case. Students have the option of forming "independent" teams that may include students from other schools or even other countries. Teams may participate in any regional round, but may only participate in one per year. If teams are unable to attend a regional round but would still like to participate in the global round, they may apply for an exceptionable berth. In order to qualify for the global round, a team competing in the regional round must meet one of the following three conditions: Be in the top half of their respective division Be the top team from their school in each division, or Score a certain number of points. In order to qualify for the further, "Tournament of Champions," held for the first time in 2012 at Yale University, teams an individuals had to meet the following conditions: Be in the top 20% of highest scoring teams at the Global round in either junior or senior teams. Score 7500+ points out of 10000 to qualify as an individual. There are both senior and junior divisions in the competition. A student's age designates which division they may participate in. Students that are ages 11--14 participate in the junior division, while students 15 and older participate in the senior division.[1] A junior can participate in the senior division if he/she wishes to. Both divisions participate simultaneously, though juniors only compete against juniors and seniors against seniors. Events: The WSC consists of four main events: The Scholar's Challenge, Collaborative Writing, The Team Debate, and The Scholar's Bowl. In addition to these four events, many more events have come to join the tournament. These events are both social and academic, and strive to solidify the community aspect of the WSC. About Kolej Yayasan Saad: Kolej Yayasan Saad (KYS), also known as Saad Foundation College (SFC), is a private, fully residential school founded by Tan Sri Halim bin Saad in 1995. It was built in memory of his late father. The college is located at Ayer Keroh, Melaka. The motto of Kolej Yayasan Saad is "Centre of Excellence". Other than KYSM, several other schools from Malaysia also qualified for the Tournament of Champions. These include Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Alor Gajah, MRSM Kuantan, Pusat Permata Pintar Negara UKM, and The Garden International School. Unfortunately Pusat Permata Pintar and The Garden International School did not show up for the events.
