Whether it’s sandy, coastal soils or older potting mixes, many of our growing mediums can become hydrophobic, or water repellent, over time. Josh is finding that one of his indoor plants, a Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.) is not retaining moisture, and in fact all of the water is running down the side of the potting mix and out the bottom of the pot immediately. To cure this, Josh suggests the following – a good old-fashioned dunking! You'll need: One large bucket or tub of water An organic wetting agent – 1 cap Liquid fish emulsion – 1 cap Seaweed extract – 1 cap Combine all ingredients in bucket and stir to combine. Gently place plant (in pot) into the mixture, allowing all air bubbles to escape, and leave pot submerged for around 30secs. Remove pot form mixture and allow excess water to drain away. This process has not only resolved the hydrophobia, it has also reinvigorated the soil. The remaining brew can either be utilised for other pots to be dunked or applied to the garden.
