They were introduced in the course of the 1990s for hauling light trains, especially for commuter service. With 717 locomotives currently in service the E.464 is the largest class in use by Trenitalia, and also the most numerous Italian locomotive class ever in service. After years of regional use, the 29th of August 2019 the first two units from a group of 70 were used to haul a long-distance Intercity train between Messina and Siracusa, in Sicily. Sicily is the first italian region to get E464 for long-distances train, because in this region this locomotives have to replace the older ones of E656’s class. In 2010 its population was 13,747. It is the main terminal of access to Sicily. On 25 April 2005 the President of the Republic had conferred upon it the title of "city". It is located on the coast of Strait of Messina, facing the city of Messina across the narrow strait and its port is the main ferry terminal for Sicily. Punta Pezzo, located in the municipality of Villa, represents the point of greatest proximity between the Calabrian shore and the Sicilian side: this has made the city the ideal place for crossing the Strait. Punta Pezzo contains a notable lighthouse. There are many neighborhoods: Acciarello, Cannitello, Pezzo and Piale. Ferry services link Villa San Giovanni and Messina, including a train ferry departing from the main railway station. The town is also served by the A2 motorway Salerno-Reggio Calabria. Now 80% of vehicles that need to go in Sicily pass by here.
