A sacrocolpopexy is a surgical procedure used to treat pelvic organ prolapse, a condition caused by a weakening of the normal support of the pelvic floor. In a sacrocolpopexy procedure, the surgeon attaches a surgical mesh from the vagina to the sacrum. Sacrocolpopexy involves suspension of the vagina to the anterior longitudinal ligament of the sacrum at the level of S1 using a bridging graft which can be made of biologic or synthetic materials. The graft is sutured to the anterior as well as the posterior vagina and then attached to the anterior longitudinal ligament of the sacrum. A number of prosthetic materials are used for reconstructive procedures such as sacrocolpopexy. Mersilene popularly used for many decades, but its use rapidly declined in favor of polypropylene, which is now the most commonly used synthetic prosthetic. In this video watch as Dr. Hasabe demonstrates how to prepare a Y-shaped sling for sacrocolpopexy using a polypropylene mesh.
