Hello everyone. We recently took a walk on the Schuylkill Navigation system (Schuylkill canal) tow path and found some interesting stuff. What I didn't realize is that right above our heads was even more history to be seen. Thanks to a great tip from @AdamHafer-v4o we have returned to said location to see if we can find a rock cut built for the Allentown and Auburn railroad circa 1855. The Allentown railroad was going to run from Allentown PA through Lehigh county and into Berks county. From there it would have gone northwest towards Port Clinton and on to Auburn PA. somewhere between Port Clinton and Auburn this road would have connected with the Dauphin and Susquehanna, later the Schuylkill and Susquehanna. This road was heavily graded through Lehigh and Berks including tunnels, overpasses, and culverts. Alas the panic of 1887 combined with the opening of the East Pennsylvania railroad resulted in this road being abandoned before completion. I believe we are in that gray area where the bottom dropped out and construction halted permanently. I will post some Google maps pictures in the community section of this channel to try and show you where we are. Thank you for watching. 7/15/24
