Gracia Baptista (fl. 1557?) was a Spanish Roman Catholic nun and composer who lived in Ávila. In the sixteenth century, it was not easy for women to devote themselves to musical activity, and the only way was often to take the habit, since in the convents many female keyboardists served as organists to accompany services religious of the congregation, which seems to be the case of Gracia Baptista. Her setting of Conditor alme, is the earliest keyboard work by an Iberian woman composer, the first published composition by a woman composer, and possibly the only surviving published keyboard work by an Iberian woman dating to before the eighteenth century. The piece is scored for voice and either organ or harpsichord. The score, polyphonic, for three voices, is published in the “Libro de cifra nueva para tecla, arpa y vihuela” by Luis Venegas de Henestrosa, a collection that includes one hundred and thirty-eight pieces for keyboard, harp and vihuela from the pen of great vihuelists such as Alonso Mudarra, Enríquez de Valderrábano and Luis de Narváez or famous organists like Antonio de Cabezón and Francisco Hernández Palero. In this anthology of the most renowned Iberian composers of the time, Baptista is the only woman. The piece is described by Josemi Lorenzo Arribas as "constructed according to the principles of Renaissance composition, with a successful contrapuntal interplay between the three voices, which alternate in the varied development of the theme passages by conjoined degrees, punctuated by chords where this tension is resolved”.
