project: SASKATOON CENTRL LIBRARY mass timber products supplied: GLULAM COLUMNS & BEAMS CLT FLOOR PANELS expected completion: 2027 Behind each mass timber element is a story rooted in sustainably harvested forests, advanced digital modelling, and the expertise of technicians who bring the project from nature to the built environment. In pre-construction, this mass timber installation animation visually demonstrates how the timber components will be installed at the new Saskatoon Central Library. The animation begins with the site-built concrete floor and concrete back-of-house, based on an as-built digital file. This model accurately reflects surveyed interface points between wood and concrete, ensuring precise coordination between structural systems. A forest of Spruce glulam columns, complete with steel connectors, are shown descending into position. These steel connectors are first anchored to the concrete, followed by the installation of Spruce glulam beams, allowing the primary structural frame to take shape. Detailed column-to-beam connections are illustrated to clearly show how each component is joined. Next, cross-laminated (CLT) timber floor panels are dropped in. Each CLT panel is uniquely fabricated and positioned for a specific location within the building model, reflecting the exact construction sequence. The process continues through to the installation of the final mass timber elements at roof level, including the "Learning Circle", completing the structural assembly. This animation enables constructors, engineers, and project teams to better understand the installation sequencing, structural interfaces, and coordination with adjacent systems such as concrete, steel, and glazing. The animation represent one component of the broader MTS Cadwork model, where every timber element is digitally coordinated and delivered exactly as modeled, supporting construction efficiency, accuracy, and risk. Once installed, the exposed wood structure grounds the space in biophilic design inspired by Traditional First Nations and Métis architecture, strengthening the relationship between the building, its site, and the natural environment through material warmth, texture, and expression. Led by First Nations architect Alfred Waugh, this architectural design is a collaboration between Formline Architecture + Urbanism, Chevalier Morales Architectes, and Architecture49, with construction by Ledcor Construction.
