Usually, my videos are filmed on weekends, but that means some streets are much quieter than usual. This video was filmed around 8:45 on a weekday morning, with the aim of catching the tail end of the morning rush hour. It starts in Oog in Al, a fairly nice residential neighborhood that was built in the 1920s. We join the Leidseweg, which is a popular bike street that follows the Leidse Rijn river. When we near the central train station, it gets pretty crowded, and the endless construction works and detours here do not help. We pass underneath the train tracks by a sizeable viaduct, before ending up on the Vredenburg, which has the busiest bike path of the Netherlands. 35,000 people pass this stretch by bike each day. Our route then passes through the historical city centre, following the main bus corridor. After exiting the city centre, there is a bit more space for bikes, because the buses mostly make another turn, and the Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat have recently been turned into bike streets. Then we go straight through the historical Wilhelminapark. Just before the viaduct, we pass the Rietveld Schröderhuis, which is one of the three UNESCO world heritage sites in Utrecht. Eventually we end up at the campus, with its rainbow bike path, and park in the bike parking garage of the university library.
